The first fall

The road from Bedouri started with corrugations – such that we haven’t seen before. It got better after a while although not as good as the roads that we conquered so far it was still pretty good. That is except the end of the main dirt track…

There, just about 400m before the bitumen starts were a few meters of very slippery fine red dirt that was still wet from the last lot of rain they had. It was hard to tell apart from the hard and dry surface, as it was dry on the top. I was riding first so it was me who hit it. I really didn’t know what was going on until the very last moment before I flew off the bike. Before that happened I was baffled as to why wasn’t the bike responding to neither more power to the rear wheel nor to any steering.

There I was, flying of my bike sideways. At the time when I hit the mud I was doing about 60 to 70 clicks so the landing wasn’t too soft - less so because I landed on the hard surface behind this mud patch.

The result is what I’m pretty sure of - a broken rib on my back and something with my foot – maybe a broken bone in the arch of the foot. I guess that we’ll see later as there is no doctor around anyway.

The distances between towns (very little towns indeed) have settled on somewhere between 200 and 400km. There is nothing but Australian desert wilderness in between.

Today we are camped on a little hill and we decided to not use the fly/mozzie screen part of the tent and will be sleeping in the open. We believe that as we are in the middle of nowhere, where nearest temporary water body is at least few dozen kilometers and on a windy hill, there will be no mozzies.

(315km)
