Today didn’t start well. We were getting up very early to catch sunrise above Uluru. When I was putting luggage on the bike I found out that my GPS unit was missing. Great! L I must have forgotten to remove it from the bike in the evening because I was in quite a pain after putting up the tent with my broken rib. I laid down as soon as I was finished and managed to forget completely about the gadget and somebody must have helped me from it during the night or the morning.
Then there was the sunrise … or more like it wasn’t…(the sunrise Uluru watching) It was even cloudier than yesterday and there was not a single ray of direct sunlight to shine on the rock. At least we met four young Koreans that wanted to have a photo taken with our motorbikes and us. They camped next to us already the night in Alice Springs and we were meeting regularly since. They were pleasant people – as probably most Koreans are (judging from my past experience) and it was the first higher point of the day. Don’t take me wrong – the rock is beautiful even without the sun shining on it, but the big loss of the GPS didn’t add to my mood, nor did the gloomy sunrise.
We had a walk along the rock and returned back to the camp to pack up and report the stolen GPS to the police.
With all that done we set off for a 50km drive to the Kata Tjuta (the Olgas). These rocks are actually even more impressive than Uluru. If the long drive is worth something I would say it is largely for the Olgas. It was a big shame that the sun was still hiding from us. It must be very beautiful when the sun is shining on them.
On our way back towards Alice Springs (actually we are heading towards King's Canyon now) we have "met" this beautiful and I have to say very cute animal.
It is still a small one (I don't dare to say a baby as I'm not really sure if there is only one type of these or more) but we were happy to see it. We "saved" him from a death on the road. We actually saw (or I should say Tanja did) a couple more of these? What is it? For those of you who really don't know - this cutie is a Thorny Devil.
Now we are on our way back to Alice Springs via the Kings Canyon and camping in the bush. One of the highlights of today was seeing a few Thorny Devils on the road. They are truly amazing creatures to look at.
